JOHOR BAHARU, April 14, 2008 (Bernama) -- A mobile broadband wireless access product, developed by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), has won a gold medal at a recent international innovation exhibition in Geneva.
The invention also won a special award at the event, dubbed the International Exhibition of Innovation, New Techniques and Products, held on April 2-6.
Director of UTM's Wireless Communication Centre, Electrical Engineering Faculty, Prof Dr Tharek Abd Rahman said the product was capable accessing 3G, GPRS or WiFi networks.
"It also has a software for efficient access to Internet as well as features for pre-paid surfing. These features are not yet available among products currently in the market.
"It's also capable of managing the frequency spectrum better," he told reporters here.
The device was useful for mobile Internet surfing such as in buses or trains so long as the users had access to 3G or GPRS networks, he said.
The product was in the process of commercialisation and would be upgraded to reduce the size to enhance its mobility, he said.
